Outriders Poetry Project
Max Wickert, Director
Advisory Board: Carl Dennis, Ann Goldsmith, Katka Hammond
Outriders was founded in 1969 by Max Wickert, Dan Murray and Doug Eichhorn. Originally conceived as an exchange program among Creative Writing Programs in Northeastern colleges and universities, it held a single reading at Syracuse University and then changed into a Poetry Reading Series based in Buffalo, N.Y., with occasional ventures into publication. In the first decade of its operation, under the direction of Max Wickert, over 130 poets read from their works in Buffalo bars, schools and at special festivals. Invited and visiting readers included Charles Baxter, Marvin Bell, Robert Bly, Robert Creeley, Carl Dennis, Cornelius Eady, Raymond Federman, Irving Feldman, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Hass, Anselm Hollo, David Ignatow, Erica Jong, Carolyn Kizer, John Logan, William Matthews, bpNichol, J.F. Nims, Pedro Pietri, Louis Simpson, William Stafford, Gerald Stern, Ann Waldrop, John Wieners, Al Young and many others. After the reading series discontinued in the early 1980s, Outriders hibernated until revived in 2009 as a small press. It now chiefly publishes poets and writers living in, or prominently associated with, the Buffalo and greater Niagara area. Although Outriders no longer conducts a regular reading series, it holds special occasional readings to promote Outriders books, or as benefit events. Outriders is privately funded. Memberships are available for $25. New members are entitled to a free copy of the latest Outriders book.
