MAX WICKERT was born 1938 in Augsburg, Germany. He immigrated with his family in 1952. After earning his doctorate from Yale, he taught in the University at Buffalo English Department until his retirement in 2006. He is the author of three collections of verse, All the Weight of the Still Midnight (1972; second, expanded edition 2013), Pat Sonnets (2000) and No Cartoons (2011), and of numerous poems and translations in journals including American Poetry Review, Choice, Chicago Review, Poetry, Sewanee Review, Shenandoah and Xanadu. His long short story, “The Scythe of Saturn” was among the winners of the first annual Stand Magazine International Fiction Competition (Newcastle-on-Tyne, UK) and has been anthologized in England. He has also been a winner or runner-up for the New Poets Prize, the Mason Sonnet Award, the Albright-Knox Poems-on-Paintings Award, and the Burchfield Center Poetry Prize. A translator for many years from German into English (including poems by Georg Trakl) and from English into German (Tuli Kupferberg’s 1001 Ways to Live Without Working), he shifted in recent years to Italian literature. His verse translation of Torquato Tasso’s renaissance epic, Gerusalemme liberata, was published as The Liberation of Jerusalem in the ‘World’s Classics Series” of Oxford University Press in 2009, and two other works by Tasso Love Poems to Lucrezia Bendidio (Italica Press, 2011) and Rinaldo (Italica Press, 2017, in preparation). Max Wickert is the founder-director of Buffalo’s Outriders Poetry Project (a reading series and small press) and the editor of An Outriders Anthology: Poetry in Buffalo 1969-1979 and After, which appeared in 2013
